How much electricity does a desktop/ laptop PC use in comparison with other appliances?

Q. Also, do you save a significant amount on electricity when your computer is on but sleeping, or not?

A. Your computer and monitor not in sleep mode can use up to 400 Kilowatt hours per year. Central AC, can use up to 2000 kilowatt hours per year. A new washing machine may use 360 kilowatt hours per year. So we could see that a computer, though small, can still use a significant amount of energy. To answer your question, yes, when in sleep, your computer goes into a low-power state. Though it still uses electricity, it wouldn't be much.

where can i find laptop computer comparison?
Q. there is a website you can go to to compare cell phones. Is there one I can go to to compare laptops? I have to purchase one for use at home and at a small business. thank you in advance for information.

A. Reviews and Ratings of computer related stuff is at http://www.cnet.com

Avoid DELL, as many reviewers think that it is OK to have exploding batteries. Avoid Dell as some reviewers think that it is OK to have poor customer service and poor tech support.

Go with Toshiba, their reliability is high, their tech support of fast and friendly.

I recommend that you visit a retail store like Staples or Costco, where the return policy is friendly. Laptops can have problems when they are NEW, but you do not want to be stuck waiting for it to be repaired.... you just might have to return it. You see, a retail store that does accept returns will only SELL the good stuff. It is costly for them to accept a return, but Stables and Costco always smiles and give you no hassle. Some stores charge a restocking fee, or simply WILL NOT return a born dead computer.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
